World Cup History 1930 - 2006 ( 18 World Cups ) ( Last Updated 10/07/06 09:00am )

FIFA was established 1n 1904, talk at the time was a World Championship for National Teams, During a FIFA meeting held in Amsterdam in 1928, two members believed Football needed a Tournament, the first was Jules Rimet, Chairman of FIFA and the second was Henri Delaunay. They both proposed a competition every four years open to all Professionals and Amateurs, to bring the best teams to the FINALS .The first competition was a short list of host nations, Italy, Holland, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay. Uruguay was elected to host the first competition, slowly many nations cancelled one by one, many nations thought the journey was to much time (sea) and expensive. Four European countries were represented France, Yugoslavia, Romania and Belgium, the rest of the countries attending were Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, Mexico, USA, Brazil, Argentina and the host team Uruguay . The teams (13) were devided into four groups, the winners of each group qualified for the Semi Finals, out of the four European teams only one survived the group stage. The first world cup final was staged on July 30th 1930, with 93,000 spectators, Jose Nasazzi was the First Captain (Uruguay / Host nation ) to Raise The Jules Rimet Trophy ....... The World Cup is now considered to be the Worlds greatest competition ...

Jules Rimet Trophy

This Trophy was designed by Abel LaFleur (French Sculptor) in Gold, is a Lady In Victory, stretching both arms to support an eight angled cup, on a marble type base, it was called The Jules Rimet Cup in honour of the founder of the world cup event .During the second world war it was hidden under a bed in Italy ! after the war the trophy was stolen at an exhibition just before the world cup in 1966 .It was found by a dog called Pickles . In 1970 it was awarded to Brazil for a third time, but this time Brazil were allowed to keep the trophy as they were the first nation to win the World Cup on three occassions 1958, 1962 and 1970 . The trophy was stolen for a second time in Brazil in 1983 and was never found, rumour is that the trophy was melted down ! Brazil have now a duplicate trophy on show.

A second trophy was selected in 1974 from 54 designs, the winning trophy was designed by an Italian, Silvio Gazazniga, it was designed using 18 carat gold, the Trophy is discribed as " Players are supporting the earth from the bottom on a circle form, which represents the emotional moment of winning the game". The trophy is 36cm high, weighs 11lbs and belongs to FIFA, a replica is presented to the Winners .
